BETH AM'S THANKSGIVING HOMECOMING

OK, it’s time. No more excuses!

Every year, Beth Am Temple joins with most of the churches in Pearl River for a lovely interfaith Thanksgiving service. Every year, we have a nice contingent present, but this year, we want to make that a large crowd.

Why is this year different from all other years?

This year, Beth Am Temple celebrates its 45th anniversary and the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will be at our first home, the Nauraushaun Presbyterian Church. OK, to be completely accurate, it is the same church, though not the original church building. Still, Nauraushaun and Beth Am have a lengthy history of working together on many common programs under the leadership of Pastors Wilbur Daniels, Sandy Shaw, Jean Holmes and now Pastor Laura Cunningham.

The Thanksgiving service is a beautiful community event, which generally lasts under an hour. It is an opportunity for the various congregations to come together in a beautiful spirit of community.

Even if you do not live in Pearl River, as a member of Beth Am, you are part of the Pearl River community. In the spirit of thanking God for our many blessings, please join us on Monday evening, November 24 at 7:30 pm at the Nauraushaun Presbyterian Church, 51 Sickletown Road in Pearl River for this wonderful annual event.

What better time to return home than Thanksgiving? Join your Beth Am family and members of many of the other Pearl River congregations for this lovely Thanksgiving custom.

Rabbi Dan Pernick

Principal's  Message

It’s heartwarming to attend our Consecration Service at Beth Am Temple. I remember the Consecration last October –sparkling excitement in the eyes of the children, happy parents – beginning the life-long journey of Judaic studies is a momentous event for all to celebrate. As parents, it’s important for each of us to encourage our children’s continuing enthusiasm and excitement toward learning about our Jewish heritage. Thousands of years of Jewish history to learn about! Yet, how do we keep our children interested? Keep them excited by showing an active interest in their studies and learning, and by ourselves pursuing the learning process, as role models.

Near the end of September, our students in Grades 4-7 earned about tzedakah (charity) during a hands-on project facilitated by Cathie Izen from The JCCY of Rockland. Our children lovingly assembled about 500 baskets of Rosh Hashanah goodies which were delivered a few days later to various health care facilities around Rockland county. Students also made Rosh Hashana cards to accompany the sweet baskets. Our students discussed tzedakah and g’melut chasadim (acts of loving-kindness). Older students here at Beth Am Temple Religious School are encouraged to volunteer and earn mitzvah hours.

An important concept in Judaism is Shabbat. To emphasize the importance of observing Shabbat, in early December our Grade 5 and 6 students are invited to attend a Shabbat Retreat. This overnight field trip in Stony Point, New York, starts at about 4 pm on Friday, December 12 and ends shortly after sunset on Saturday, December 13. We’ll be joined by peers from Temple Beth El of Spring Valley to explore Shabbat ruach (spirit) and menukah (relaxation), through song, good food, prayer, Israeli dance, and other fun activities.

We’re looking forward to the L’Taken Seminar (better known as the “RAC trip”) in January and hope to see all students from Grades 10, 11, and 12 attend. The Religious Action Center, RAC, is the political arm of the Reform Movement. This annual trip, an intensive four-day study kallah in Washington, DC, focuses on Jewish values and social justice. Every year more than 100 congregations from across the country bring their high school students to participate in this exciting event.

Soon enough, we’ll be getting ready for Chanukah. Please volunteer your time to cook up some latkes or prepare a special dinner treat. This year, in addition to latkes, everyone is invited to our Chanukah Party and School-wide Concert! (See dates, below.) For more information on how you can join/assist our Va’ad Horim (Parent Committee) with latkes or other activities, please contact Evan Karzhevsky (evankarr@hotmail.com or 845- 893-8158, cell).

See you soon! Marian
